God's Eye

Ojo de Dios

The ojo de dios, or god's eye, is a simple weaving made with 2 sticks and yarn. When a child is born, the center "eye" is woven in a single color. This weaving is hung over the child's bed or crib to insure God watches over him/her and keeps them safe and healthy. Each year another color is added to the weaving on the child's birthday.

You will need:

2 popsicle sticks, dowels or skewers
yarn
glue
1. Cross sticks in the middle and glue.

2. Tie the yarn around the stick A. Then wind the yarn once around stick B.

3.Go over C and wrap around, go over D and wrap around.

Variations

Make different sizes.

Try variegated yarn (a skein of yarn dyed several different colors.

Make a natural God's Eye using branches and raffia.

For a 3D effect wind yarn around the back of the sticks or reverse direction. (weave backwards).

4. When changing yarn colors tie yarn ends together. Continue weaving until you have almost reached the end of the sticks. Tie end of yarn and tuck it in.
